(More)…]]> I remember when I was a kid, my friend’s dad had just taken him to buy a couple of CDs and that afternoon I rode my bike over to his house to see what treasures he returned with. I think he wanted to buy toys, Transformers and such, but I had perhaps peer-pressured him into collecting music instead. He had bought Bon Jovi ‘Slippery When Wet’ and Beastie Boys ‘Paul’s Boutique’. The Bon Jovi songs had already been endlessly played on the radio, so I dove right in on ‘Paul’s Boutique’. It was tremendous. I just kept thinking to myself, “What are they doing? What are those sounds? Why does this feel so good?”. They were talking about places I didn’t know about, using samples of songs I hadn’t heard, and they had an energy that’s never been duplicated. The sound of that CD was like a sonic portal into a party that I was too young and naive to be allowed into, but there I was, a welcome guest. That party is still raging any time I listen to ‘Shadrac’ or ’3 Minute Rule’.

So today, on the morning of the Beastie Boy’s Adam “MCA” Yauch’s death, I can only hope he knew that there are millions of us that are so thankful for letting us all into the party.

After spending a lovely May Day in some marches here in Seattle I spent the evening at a beautiful theatre, The Paramount, to see my friends Snow Patrol. Of course I’m biased, but I can honestly cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die tell you that they are a great live band and a lot of fun. Pinky swear.

They will be in your neighbourhood at the Hollywood Palladium on May 8th, usually they play massive stadiums so it’s a really nice treat to be able to see them in cozier spots. I highly recommend you go see them play, and their soundman is possibly the best live mixer I’ve ever heard! Anyway, go and come back here and let me know what you thought of their show!

Don’t panic, the bright glowing yellow orb in the sky is not an alien invader, it is the Sun. I know that it is foreign in these parts of the world, but I assure you that as long as you put on a little sunscreen, it is very safe. Perhaps even enjoyable. 

In southern California we co-exist peacefully with the Sun for most of the year. We wear fewer clothes and our skin takes on a darker hue, and we spend a lot more time outside at places known as “the beach” and “the park”. 

So please do not fire that massive particle cannon that you have hidden in the Space Needle (in case of alien invasion) at that glowing orb, but rather revel in it. 

The Sun is your friend, I hope you can get outside today and enjoy it today!
