“Scared Is A Superpower!”

There are only four more days left until the new season of Doctor Who starts and I’m excited for it. I know the special effects aren’t Hollywood blockbuster quality, and for some folks it’s just too weird of a show, but one of the reasons why I love it so much is the immense humanity the characters often express.

This is a quote from an episode from last season, ‘Listen’, where The Doctor is calming a scared little boy and putting fear into perspective, please read in Peter Capaldi’s delightful Scottish accent:

“Let me tell you about scared. Your heart is beating so hard I can feel it through your hands. There’s so much blood and oxygen pumping through your brain it’s like rocket fuel. Right now you could run faster and you can fight harder. You can jump higher than ever in your life and you are so alert it’s like you can slooow doooown tiiiiime.

What’s wrong with scared? Scared is a superpower! Your superpower! There is danger in this room. And guess what? It’s you.”

There are many times in the series when the characters and stories are used to define what it is to be human and also to inspire the best qualities of humanity, it’s pretty cool.

Well, I should probably stop geeking out right now and get back to making music.

Best,

SJ

PS. I have a song that references Doctor Who (and Firefly, Einstein, Douglas Adams, et al) that you might dig if you’re into those types of things, it’s called ‘Kumbaya Supernova’ and I have a demo of it here:
