Call Me Back Again

This is so good, I’m not sure if I’m posting it here to share it with you or to save it here for myself so I can always come back to it:

When I was in high school I had Wings Over America (my friends were all in to later grunge music, so my choice was a little weird) and played the fekk out of it, and this was one of my favourite songs on it. Anyway, I hope you dig it.

Spotify, Fans and Artists

I use Spotify all the time, I think it’s cool that for a monthly fee ($10) I can have a huge catalog of music at my fingertips, and artists get paid for every listen. The interfaces is a bit klunky, but the convenience of having so much music in hand makes up for it. AND because it’s a streaming service, I don’t have to keep backing up hard drives of MP3s and trying to figure out what to fit on my iPod.

One of my other favourite things about Spotify is that artists (and therefore engineers, producers, designers, etc etc) get paid for the music that other people are enjoying, and even though right now they get paid very very little, there is promise that as more people sign on then the pay will scale more toward the artist’s favour.

This article from the Independent (thanks Phil!) has a little more info:

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/streamage-kicks-is-spotify-a-musicians-friend-or-foe-8455760.html

I remain skeptical of whether the artists will ever get their fair share, but at least it is better than people listening to music without giving a little bit of support back to the folks who put a lot of time and effort into making that music. Every little bit helps.

The moral of the story, keep listening to lots of music, and thank you for supporting independent artists!

PS. I’m on Spotify too, and you can listen to my music here, and I might even get a few pennies for it!: http://open.spotify.com/artist/5hwEiNPiEfXbGH1YQSClFt

An Itch I Needed Scratching

I got this song stuck in my head, it’s from an Elvis Costello album that I used to listen to all the time when I was a kid, ‘Spike’. Yes, I had really weird music tastes for a kid. But anyway, the song is called ‘Baby Plays Around’, and I was relieved to find it on YouTube so I could scratch this musical itch:

This live version is gorgeous. I’ve closed my eyes and listened to it three times while taking breaks from posting this. Ok, I’ll finally press “send”.

Spirit In the Dark

Here we have Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles singing ‘Spirit in the Dark’, I feel like this performance should have brought about a new age of understanding and enlightenment for the human species:

This version is different than the one that ended up on the vinyl record of Aretha live at the Fillmore West with King Curtis, which I think is from another night in the same concert series. I recommend both.
