Hobbs!

Okay, so you may have already met him as our guitarist, but you should also know that Hobbs writes, performs, and records his own songs. His tunes are delicious, go try some:

Not In The Mood

I’m just not in the mood to blog today. I’d like to have a nice live concert video from YouTube to share with you, or some cool science story, or anything interesting like that, but I just can’t summon the motivation to do any of that stuff. Today, I sorted and uploaded some photos from fans, I invited some folks to some upcoming shows, I came up with some song ideas, I planned and schemed, I replied to fan emails (https://www.sjatr.com/contact), I “followed” people on Twitter (http://twitter.com/saintjohn), I texted friends, I started designing a new poster, I talked to some folks about helping me book shows, I ate a PB&J, I’m making a cup of tea right now and typing this message to you, and I don’t imagine anything interesting will happen for the rest of the evening, but now that I’ve said that I can hear the Universe stifling a laugh…

Check back tomorrow, we’ll see what’s up for real instead of this laundry list of blah.

Chinua Achebe

One of the greatest 20th Century authors has died, Chinua Achebe. Achebe told stories that brought readers into colonial Africa, with very compelling characters and situations that showed how complex the relationships were for both the European invaders and especially Nigerians in different parts of society.

I also loved his writing style, there was always a cadence and way that Achebe could finish a character’s thought or sentence that revealed how absurd or tragic or beautiful something was. And with very seemingly small situations he could show the reader how the world can become a huge mess. If you haven’t read any of his books yet, I recommend you find a way to remedy that.

Universe Baby Pictures

Aw, isn’t he cute?!, here’s a picture of our Universe from about 13.8 billion years ago:

That’s not exactly true, some clever scientists took this picture with a microwave camera that can map energy and mass concentrations in the Universe from background radiation from when the Universe was very very young. They are using this data to refine their understanding of how the Universe began with the Big Bang and to figure out how it’s evolving.
